HYP-1
hypnotic techno and acid for the FM-1, in the browser: the same code the FM-1 runs
Turn your phone sideways for bigger controls.
Play it from your FM-1, or any MIDI controller
Plug the FM-1 in by USB and connect it here (Chrome, Edge or Firefox). With HYP-1 on the FM-1, press SEL + GLO on it: its panel plays this one exactly (buttons, keys, every knob and MASTER), its own sound goes quiet, and its lights follow the screen here. SEL + GLO again gives it back. With M-VAVE's firmware, or any other controller, its keys play the keys here straight away; for the rest, use MIDI learn: click a control here, then move or press the one you want on your controller.
Pages and knobs
SELECT steps through every page in order. The buttons jump to a voice; pressing the same button again steps through that voice's pages (its envelope, its LFO). KNOB 1 is a voice's level. There are ten pieces, 01 to 10 (PRESETS), each with its own settings and its own six drum patterns. Each keeps your changes until the power goes off, unless you store it: on Global, press SAVE. Each power-on starts on a piece at random: as you stored it, or a little changed from its factory settings if you never did.
Tempo HOME
- Tempo, Evolve
- 70 to 190 BPM (also HOME + SELECT, from any page); how restless the acid line and the chords are.
- Motion, Drift
- How far the slow tide swings between sparse and full; how long a chord lasts, 20 s to 5 min.
Pad ENV, ENV, ENV
- Pad
- Level, Bright (the filter and the vowel), Colour (Rhodes or Voices), Detune.
- Pad env
- Each voice's breath: Attack, Hold, Release, Rest.
- Pad LFO
- Rate (1/4 note to 32 bars), Depth, Shape (sine, triangle, saw, square, sample and hold, drift), Target (filter, level, pan, pitch).
Noise SELECT
- Level, Colour
- A bed of grain: white, pink, brown, blue, violet, grey, black (crackle), yellow (a radio's hiss).
- Tone, Pump
- A low-pass on it; how hard the kick ducks it.
Drone LFO, LFO, LFO
- Drone
- Level, Octave, Cutoff, Reso.
- Drone env
- Trigger (each chord, or every 1 to 8 bars), Attack, Decay, Amount (on the cutoff).
- Drone LFO
- Rate, Depth, Shape, Target (cutoff, pitch, level, drive). By default a 16-bar sine on the cutoff.
Acid ARP, ARP, ARP
- Acid
- Level, Cutoff, Reso, Env mod.
- Acid env
- Decay, Accent, Slide, Wave (saw or square).
- Acid line
- Density, Length (1 to 16 steps: odd lengths turn against the bar), Range (1 to 3 octaves), Mutate (how often steps are made anew). OCT− / OCT+ move it an octave (on any Acid page).
Drums SEQ (hold: sequencer)
- Level, Drive, Swing
- The kit's level; the kick's drive; the off sixteenths late.
- Pattern
- One of six. A new pattern waits for the end of the bar, so turning past others on the way plays none of them.
Links SEQ, SEQ
- The drums into the voices
- SEL + SEQ turns them on and off (+LINK shows on the line above the knobs). K>Drone: each kick opens the drone's filter (a rolling bass). S>Pad: each snare or clap flashes the pad open. H>Acid: a hat on an acid note accents it. P>Clock: the acid steps only on the perc lane's hits (free again in a breakdown).
Space SELECT
- Echo, Echo time
- The tape echo's send; its time, an eighth to a bar.
- Reverb, Size
- The plate's send; how long it rings, and how often the echo returns.
Global GLO
- Root, Theme
- The key's root; the screen's colours (Synth, Acid, Ice, Ember, Phosphor).
- Tune, MIDI out
- Fine tuning in cents; MIDI out over USB. Theme, Tune and MIDI out are kept across power-offs (written two seconds after a change).
- SAVE (here)
- Stores the piece as it is: every setting, its six patterns, its drums' sounds. Hold it 1.5 s to put the piece back to its factory settings (and out of the store). The line above the knobs says whether the piece is stored, factory, or changed; a dot in the piece's tag means unstored changes.
Styles (SEL + ALGORITHM)
- Each piece has a style, shown at the left of the line above the knobs, and stored with the piece. It reshapes every voice and the feel; the patterns stay yours.
- Hypnotic: the sound as it always was. House: a round kick, a shuffle, a wide clap and open hats, congas, the pad stabbing chords on the off-beats, a warm bass. Techno: a hard kick with a rumble, metal hats, a bell perc, a dark pad and a gritty drone. Acid: a punchy kit with a cowbell, a little swing, the 303 driven and up front. Breakcore: a distorted, crushed kit, chopped with ghost notes and 32nd rolls (Evolve: more), a dirty sub, the acid at half time.
- Switching style takes the tempo into its usual range (house 118–128, techno 128–138, acid 120–132, breakcore 160–180); after that any tempo from 70 to 190 goes.
The sequencer (hold SEQ)
- Six lanes: kick, snare, clap, closed hat, open hat, perc. Sixteen steps.
- The sixteen white keys (the lower row) are the steps of the drum you're on: they light where it hits, and a tap turns a hit on or off. The light running across them is the playhead.
- OCT− / OCT+ step through the drums. SELECT leaves for the next page.
- With SEL held: black keys 1–6 copy the pattern you're editing into pattern 1–6, OCT− clears the drum's lane, OCT+ puts the piece's own lane back, and white keys 1–6 pick the pattern to edit.
- The knobs: the lane's Level, Tune and Decay, and the Pattern. It edits the pattern chosen, even before it plays.
- SEQ again goes back to the Drums page. The patterns and the lanes' sounds are the piece's: store the piece (Global, SAVE) to keep them.
Buttons
- Keys are the scale: each one adds or removes its note. The root stays.
- PLAY plays / stops. REC freezes. EDIT the next chord.
- OCT− / OCT+: an octave down or up, to three either way. On a Pad, Drone or Acid page, that voice; on any other page, the whole song. The line above the knobs shows OCT+1 (the voice) or SONG+1 (the song).
- SAVE is the breakdown: tap it and the breakdown starts on the next bar and lasts until you tap again, which brings a four-bar build and the drop. Hold it instead for the drop on the next bar. It lights while a breakdown or build runs, and blinks while one waits for the bar.
- FX turns the effects menu on and off. While it is on, each key plays its effect while held; hold SAVE and tap keys to lock effects on.
- ALGORITHM the mode, PRESETS the piece (01 to 10).
- SEL is a shift: hold it and white keys 1–6 pick pattern 1–6 (lit: the one chosen; it waits for the bar), PRESETS picks a piece that comes in on the next bar instead of at once, ALGORITHM picks the piece's style, and SEQ turns the links on and off.
- On the Global page, SAVE stores the piece instead (held: factory settings). Stored while playing, it is written as soon as you stop: a write silences the sound for a moment, so it never happens mid-performance. A dot at the top right means a write is waiting.
Effects (FX on)
- Each key plays its effect while held.
- Hold SAVE for lock mode: each key you tap locks its effect on (it turns purple), one at a time or several together; tap a locked one again to unlock it. Keys already held when SAVE goes down lock too. Let go of SAVE and the locks stay while you play other effects on top. Tap a locked effect's key to turn just that one off. Closing FX lets them all go. SAVE tapped alone is still the breakdown.
- White keys 1–6: beat repeat 1/2, 1/4, 1/6, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 (from the next sixteenth; the shortest held wins). 7 reverse, 8 tape stop.
- White keys 9–14: mute kick, hats, snare (with clap and perc), drone, acid, pad (with the noise). 15 low-pass, 16 high-pass.
- Black keys 1–5: gate 1/16, gate 1/8, echo throw, crush, drum fill. 6–11: solo, each beside its mute.
Mouse, touch and keyboard
- Drag a knob up or down, or use the scroll wheel over it. Click or touch buttons and keys; Shift-click (or right-click) a button to hold it down, click again to let go.
- White keys 1–8: Q–I, 9–16: A–K. Black keys 1–11: 1–0, -.
- Space PLAY, Enter REC, Esc HOME, V ENV, L LFO, P ARP, M SEQ (hold: the sequencer), O GLO, C EDIT, ` FX, B SAVE, Z / X OCT− / OCT+, ↑ ↓ SELECT.
Power-on
Each start shows RedtailWorks (and its red panda), then HYP-1, then plays a piece at random (any button or key skips ahead). New start powers it off and on; stored pieces are kept (in this browser), and Forget stored clears them. It is the firmware, not a recording: what you hear is HYP-1 running, at the FM-1's 44.1 kHz. The idea of running FM-1 firmware in the browser comes from Groove OS's emulator.
